I can't seem to paste a custom Mac icon. What's wrong?

Custom icons cannot always be applied to files or folders. If you attempt to paste a custom icon and the paste command is grayed out, or the operation simply won’t work, there are several things you can do to try and solve the problem:

  • Check to see if the destination file/folder is locked.
  • Is the file/folder a direct component of the System Folder?
  • Is your clipboard full? How much free RAM do you currently have?

All these factors may hinder the application of custom icons. Certain icons that are direct components of the System such as the Finder or Trash Can icon can only be changed via helper apps.
