How do I get started designing my own icons?

If you’re just starting out designing icons, we suggest that you first familiarize yourself with the Tutorial that’s included in the IconBuilder folder. This tutorial takes you through the production process of creating icons.

We are often asked about our own design process. Of course, every project has it’s own needs, but the workflow generally happens like this:

  1. Do concept sketches that get approved by the client. These rough sketches help the designer and client visualize the end result. Working with a pen and paper can save a lot of time at this point in the project.
  2. Create the artwork in vector formats (with FreeHand or Illustrator) that can be updated easily as the project progresses. The vectors are rasterized into JPEG proof sheets that are mailed to the client for approval.
  3. After final approval, the vectors are rasterized and touched up in Photoshop (especially with the 16×16 and 32×32 pixel resources.) After touchup, the final files are created with IconBuilder and delivered to the client.

The most important advice we can give to any designer just starting out with icon design is to practice, practice, practice. The work you see on this site is the result of over 10 years of it :-)
