Should I avoid using "cicn" resources for UI elements?

Some of your projects may be using ‘cicn’ resources for UI elements. We suggest that you update these resources to use icon suites instead. There are several good reasons for doing so:

  • The ‘cicn’ resource does not support millions of colors or transparency which is required by modern user interfaces.
  • Editing ‘cicn’ resources requires running the Classic version of Resourcerer.
  • No code changes are required, the only changes are with resources.

Creating the icon suite resources is easy using Photoshop and IconBuilder. When you save the file, make sure that the Save Options have “Add resources for Appearance Manager” checked on. This will create icon suite resources that are compatible with the Appearance Manager.
